Community HealthCorps members from the Community Health Care Association of New York State, Hudson River Health Care, Lutheran Family Medical Center, Open Door Family Medical Center, Ryan/Chelsea-Clinton Community Health Center, and NACHC’s Community HealthCorps VISTA program joined other AmeriCorps programs in East Harlem’s Jefferson Park in New York City on Saturday, May 9 to kick off AmeriCorps Week, and Get Green Done!

New York State Governor David A. Paterson and First Lady Michelle Paige Paterson opened the event with motivational words, followed by music from a local band, and lunch.  Over 1,500 AmeriCorps members, community volunteers, and staff members then dispersed throughout the East Harlem community to participate in various service projects that promoted environmental education and neighborhood and/or park clean-up and beautification.

Community HealthCorps and other AmeriCorps members make a difference throughout New York State every day.  They dedicate time to serve with very few tangible rewards, and rely on the satisfaction of helping others to keep them motivated.  We were pleased to see such a large group of members from all different programs, coming together with a common goal:  Get Green Done!
